In this episode, Ali sits down with 'joy rebel' Sue to talk about the years that took her from a high-pressure corporate career to becoming a performance coach via grief, a global pandemic, and a breast cancer diagnosis she wasn't expecting.

In this episode:

Sue first connected with Ali's meditations back in 2020, during the depths of the pandemic, when she was living in Cheltenham but separated from her family in North Manchester. She talks honestly about what it was like when work and home collapsed into the same four walls and how meditation, horse riding and running became her way of staying grounded.

In early 2021, Sue's family contracted COVID, and she lost her brother-in-law suddenly. Unable to be with her sister or attend the funeral because of lockdown restrictions, Sue found her way through by starting a gratitude journalling practice something she and Ali dig into together, with a nod to Brené Brown and Liz Gilbert along the way.

That loss became a turning point. Sue left her permanent corporate role and trained as a performance coach, eventually building a private client base alongside part-time corporate work.

2024 brought a run of good things training for SEMA, a tenth wedding anniversary trip, and a solo wellness retreat in Formentera, Ibiza. It also brought an unexpected discovery: a concerning finding during a mammogram follow-up while she was away, which led to biopsies and, in October 2024, a diagnosis of early-stage but aggressive breast cancer.

Sue takes us through the eighteen months that followed; starting chemotherapy just over two weeks after diagnosis, the emotional and logistical weight of treatment, and how she kept herself steady by honouring her emotions rather than pushing them down, and by staying grateful for the small things: being able to move, being able to eat, being surrounded by people who showed up for her.

Treatment concluded this May. Sue is now taking the summer to consider what's next but she knows project management isn't part of it, but coaching and a search for what genuinely brings her joy are.

Sue's closing message: don't wait for the "right time" to pursue what makes you happy.
